Press Release: Michael D. Glant, M.D., Assumes the New Role of Medical Director at Orchard Software

Friday, July 1, 2011. Carmel, IN

Michael D. Glant, M.D., Medical DirectorCurt Johnson, Chief Operating Officer for Orchard Software, has announced the addition of Michael Glant, M.D., to Orchard Software’s team as Medical Director. Dr. Glant was previously the founder of, and a pathologist at, the second independent fine needle aspiration (FNA) clinic in the US, Diagnostic Cytology Laboratories, Inc., in Zionsville, Indiana. Dr. Glant, who assumes his new duties on July 5, 2011, will provide additional resources toward the development of Orchard’s various laboratory systems to meet the evolving needs of today’s integrated laboratory.

In his new role, Dr. Glant will work closely with operations, product development, sales, and marketing. With his assistance, Orchard will maintain its leading edge in laboratory software development and enhance installation, integration, service, and support capabilities.

Mr. Johnson states, “There are two trends within the laboratory industry driving evolutionary change. The first is molecular testing and the blurring lines between the various laboratory disciplines, namely clinical and anatomic. An example of this is HPVs and Pap smears, PSAs with cancer biopsies, and CBCs with bone marrows. The second trend driving change is the HITECH initiative and the resulting need for structured data. As one of the leading pathologists in the country with an expertise in informatics, Dr. Glant created one of the first, if not the first, AP Systems designed with discrete data and synoptic reporting capabilities for DCL. Based on this experience, Dr. Glant’s input and guidance was influential in the design of our Orchard® Pathology system.”

Dr. Glant received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Indiana University (1969-76). He was accepted in the Otolaryngology Residency at Indiana University Medical Center; however, Dr. Glant decided to go into pathology. During his pathology residency, he gained a strong interest in teaching and cytopathology, especially with the newly published reports about FNA, so he stayed at IUMC and became the Director of Cytopathology. He soon reached the level of Associate Professor of Pathology and developed FNA programs at IUMC, including the first Cytopathology Fellowship at that institution in 1984. During this period, because of his direct involvement in FNA collection and processing, he developed an expanded teaching and patient care experience for the pathology residents and cytotechnology students that became well known.

In late 1984, Dr. Glant began working outside IUMC and founded the second independent FNA clinic in the United States, Diagnostic Cytology Laboratories, Inc. From 1987 to 1993, he was a committee member of the Cytopathology Council Commission on Continuing Education, American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), which initiated a vigorous lecture and publication period with over 250 invited lectures and several book chapters. Over the years, Dr. Glant has collected and diagnosed over 20,000 FNA cases using his approach for high diagnostic yield. Presently, DCL pathologists utilize their own ultrasound equipment in the procurement of FNA specimens from numerous body sites.

In the mid-1990s, Dr. Glant became involved with FDA clinical trials (cytopathology, oncology, and endometrial hormonal response) and informatics. At DCL, he developed a series of unique computer systems for anatomic pathology and has become very involved in medical informatics. Under his guidance, DCL has completed over 500 clinical trials, including the management of all of the tissue diagnoses for the HPV vaccine developed by Merck and the analysis of endometrial tissue in subjects using both estrogen receptor and progesterone receptor modulators. Dr. Glant was also the medical director for the educational business (CytoQuest, Midwest Institute of Medical Education) that eventually created the first national proficiency test for gynecologic cytology that was sold to the ASCP and continues to be used. In this role, Dr. Glant developed both enduring materials and innovative approaches to educational delivery. He has expertise in electronic imaging and manipulation, as well as database design and management; 3D animation; video capture, editing, production, and web design; and web streaming.

Dr. Glant is now working as a diagnostic and educational consultant for DCL as he transitions to being the new Medical Director at Orchard Software. In addition, he has developed a media development company and is working on utilizing 3D animation systems, including developing models for medical illustration.
