Orchard® Pathology is a comprehensive pathology information system designed to meet the current and future trends in pathology and handle the complexities of clinical, molecular, and pathology testing and reporting. Orchard Pathology can be used as a stand-alone system for anatomic pathology testing or as a complete system that includes clinical and molecular testing. The shared database used by these various diagnostic disciplines provides access to the patient’s entire history and enables the consolidation of clinical results to the cytology or pathology report.

Image management tools make it easy to link digital images, annotated diagrams, and scanned documents to case worksheets and incorporate them onto patient reports. Information on each report is stored in discrete data fields that enhance EMR integration and simplify the process to mine data for evaluations, correlation studies, quality assurance, regulatory, statistical, and many other management reports.

“All for one—unifying CP and AP data”

CAP Today February 2011Is there such a thing as “true” integration of CP and AP data? Is integration compatible with information systems that are “best of breed”? These questions are part of the debate facing anatomic pathology laboratories and their decision for implementing diagnostic information systems. Orchard Pathology, a system featuring a unified CP/AP database, was featured as a leader in the industry due to the system’s unique and advanced design. In this CAP Today article, the author provides insight on the issues facing anatomic pathology laboratories and their lab systems and how systems with a unified database for both clinical and anatomic pathology are the future.

“Unified AP/LIS—
‘one system, with one database’”

CAP Today February 2011 Laboratories have traditionally believed that there is no diagnostic information system available that combines their anatomic and clinic pathology data into one patient file. However, there is at least one product that breaks that stereotype: Orchard Pathology. Orchard’s pathology information system simplifies the complexities of integrated diagnostics and reporting. This article in CAP Today provides more details on the product’s features that explain its quick rise to be a leader in the industry.

Overview and the Trends in Pathology

The following trends in pathology are affecting information systems, their use, and desired features. The overriding question is how quickly pathologists embrace the value of informatics and the codification of diagnosis for synoptic reporting and improved data mining. We already see the increased use of microscopes with the capability to create digital images, and digital diagnosis will take place in the near future.  Along with this is the increased desire to annotate these images and include them within the patient report. As the penetration of electronic medical records (EMR) systems increases, delivering these reports to providers’ EMRs will become more important. Finally, the growth in molecular and genetic testing is bringing together the disciplines of clinical and anatomic pathology for more sophisticated diagnoses and reporting.

Orchard Pathology, developed in 2005 and released to the marketplace in 2006, was designed to accommodate the comprehensive pathology laboratory and the future trends in diagnostics. Orchard Pathology is a complete diagnostic information system, where clinical and anatomic data share the same database and where pathology data is stored in discrete data fields to simplify synoptic reporting and data mining.

Orchard Pathology is a complete information system that eliminates the manual system of audit trails and paper files and utilizes a single database to fully integrate all laboratory departments. Orchard Pathology improves efficiency; reduces errors; aids decision-making; eliminates paper files and storage; and with the onset of molecular testing, simplifies the complexities of integrated diagnostics. Orchard Pathology provides the comprehensive pathology laboratory with all the benefits of electronic record-keeping, rules-based decision-making, and the integration of results. Put all your results into one basket. Harvest the power of Orchard Pathology.

Stand-alone AP System or an All-inclusive CP/AP System

Orchard Pathology is utilized as a stand-alone AP system or as a single system that includes clinical and molecular. For laboratories with clinical, molecular, and pathology departments, the fully integrated pathology system uses a common database, and with a single mouse click, you may access a patient’s entire clinical history and add clinical results to the cytology or pathology report.  This streamlined process saves time in producing your most valuable product: the finished report.

Worksheet Window Simplifies Case Management

Orchard Pathology WorksheetOrchard Pathology is designed to simplify case management by employing a worksheet window that you may customize for use with your established templates or protocols.  The worksheet is very flexible, allowing you to add typed transcriptions, use pre-formatted templates and forms, or insert text generated by voice recognition software.  This allows you to generate synoptic reports.  And with the system’s multi-level sign-off procedures, you can forward cases for electronic review and final approval.

Structured Data Fields for Data Mining and EMR Connectivity

Orchard Pathology uses a customizable worksheet with established templates, protocols, and diagnoses that structures data for standardization and synoptic reporting.  Unlike other legacy systems that do not utilize pathology-specific word processing, Orchard Pathology stores report information as discrete data for evaluations, correlation studies, quality assurance, regulatory, statistical, and many other management reports.  This allows pathologists to easily create ad-hoc reports without special computing skills.

“I work for a Urology group and the group decided to expand our lab to include AP. We have installed and been live with our AP module since October 2007 and our physicians and pathologist are very pleased. Orchard was wonderful with helping get everything set up and the pathologist and staff trained. I think our reports (which are custom) look better than any other reference lab we have used in the past. Orchard has done a beautiful job helping us customize our reports. Orchard knows what they are doing and they have a great program for AP.”

— Eyre Klindt, Metropolitan Urologic Specialists, P.A.
Real-time Processing through Equipment Integration

Orchard’s ability to interface pathology instrumentation for positive sample identification reduces errors and allows the pathology laboratory to move away from the inefficiencies associated with batch processing. Bar coding of specimens, tissue cassettes, and slides, allows pathologists and technicians to move cases confidently through the analytical process with greater speed and accuracy. Utilizing the most up-to-date integration languages, Orchard Pathology integrates with the latest pathology equipment, ranging from slide labelers to microscopes to cassette readers, to ease your workflow and speed up turnaround time.

Result Evaluation Rules for Reflex Testing

The robust rules-based decision-support made famous in Orchard Harvest LIS is available throughout Orchard Pathology, and result evaluation rules for reflex testing customize workflow scenarios to meet an individual facility’s needs.  As an example, send-out tests, correlations, quality assurance protocols, and confirmatory testing can be automatically reflex-ordered according to verbiage in the report text.  The rule triggers the protocol, provides internal and/or reportable documentation, and automatically adds charges for billable procedures.

Easy Image Management

Linked Images Available from the Orchard Pathology WorksheetThe image management tools in Orchard Pathology make it easy for you to link digital images and scanned documents to case worksheets and/or patient reports.  Orchard Pathology supports a number of common image formats, and allows you to associate pertinent comments with each image. The system also manages consultation reports, eliminating the need for bulky paper files, and provides a single source for all related patient reports.

Consolidated Results on a Single Patient Report

Orchard Pathology simplifies the complexities of clinical, molecular, and pathology reporting by combining results from various departments into a single patient report.  For laboratories performing integrated diagnostics, Orchard Pathology utilizes a common database, and with a single mouse click, you may access the patient’s entire clinical history and add clinical results to the molecular or pathology report.  This streamlines reporting, saves time, and allows you to consolidate all the patient’s results into a single report.

Web-based Access and EMR Connectivity

Orchard Software’s multiple web-enabled outreach products provide unmatched abilities for pathologists to provide easy order entry and rapid result retrieval to their providers. For clients requiring EMR connectivity, our systems interface directly to their EMR, allowing them to electronically receive patient demographics and lab orders and then send results back.  For clients without EMR interfaces, Orchard’s outreach systems provide remote access via the Internet to place orders; edit patients’ demographics; print labels, requisitions, and invoices; and view completed results.  By providing electronic access and EMR connectivity, you eliminate paper requisitions, reduce errors, save time, improve efficiency, increase revenue, and stay competitive.
