If you still use Internet Explorer (IE) 11 as your primary browser, now is a good time to begin planning a transition to a different browser. Originally released in 2013, IE 11 is reaching the end of its lifecycle. Microsoft has announced a timeline for winding down support for the IE browser, as well as the “legacy” (EdgeHTML) version of the Microsoft Edge browser.

Important Dates to Note

  • August 17, 2021: Microsoft 365 apps and services no longer support IE 11. Note that Microsoft Teams stopped supporting IE 11 on November 30, 2020.
  • June 15, 2022: The Internet Explorer (IE) 11 desktop app ends support for certain operating systems.

What You Might Begin Seeing

As the support window closes, you may begin having trouble with apps and services that previously worked with IE 11. Specifically, you may “have a degraded experience or be unable to connect to Microsoft 365 apps and services,” according to Microsoft’s announcement.

What Should You Do?

In cases where you receive errors or notice functionality not working as expected when using IE 11, it is a good idea to try downloading the current version of one of the more modern browsers (e.g., Microsoft Edge – Chromium version, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox) to see if that fixes the issue. Microsoft even offers a version of the Microsoft Edge browser with an IE mode for apps or sites that are built to require IE.

Of course, if you want to avoid potential IE 11 issues, you may want to go ahead and select a different browser to use in place of IE 11. While Orchard does not currently recommend a specific browser, we do strongly recommend keeping your browser up to date with all version and security updates for the best performance and safest experience.

How Does This Affect Orchard Products?

Orchard follows Microsoft’s schedule for supporting products, including the support for IE 11. So, if you discover an issue with your Orchard web-based products while using IE 11, we encourage you to first try using a different browser, and to reach out to Orchard Software Technical Support at (800) 571-5835 if the issue continues.
