Changes in the U.S. health care delivery system are underway, driven by the need to reduce escalating costs and improve patient care outcomes. Additionally, advances in both lab testing technology and health information technology (HIT) are pushing toward a more patient-centered, proactive health care system. Bringing lab testing to the patient’s side in situations where this type of testing can improve care or reduce costs fits well in this new model. Point-of-care testing (POCT) provides immediate results in non-laboratory settings to support a more patient-centered approach to health care delivery, allowing for rapid treatment of the patient, and in many cases eliminating unnecessary downstream costs.
