During this session, Dr. Karon will review the current state of the HIV epidemic, both in the US and around the world. The use of rapid HIV tests to advance CDC goals towards broader HIV testing will be discussed. Dr. Karon will also review Mayo Clinic evaluations and performance characteristics of different FDA-approved rapid HIV tests. Finally, the session will highlight healthcare settings where rapid HIV testing may have the most impact.

About the Speaker:
Brad Karon, MD, PhD
Co-director Hospital Labs Mayo Clinic Dr. Karon is a professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is co-director of Point-of-care Testing, Hospital Clinical Laboratories, and Laboratory Services (phlebotomy) at Mayo Rochester. Dr. Karon’s primary interest is in critical and point-of-care testing. He previously served as chair of the AACC Division of Critical and Point-of-care Testing and as a member of the College of American Pathologists Point-of-care resource committee. Dr. Karon has published numerous studies related to point-of-care testing. |
