2019 Point-of-Care Webinar Series
As point-of-care testing (POCT) gains greater traction in value-based healthcare, Orchard Software continues to develop tools that help the laboratory be an integral part of providing superior patient care. Orchard, along with other vendors with a shared interest in POCT, is sponsoring several POC Group webinars in 2018. The POC Group webinars are produced by Whitehat Communications and are focused on topics of interest to the laboratory and POCT industry. The free webinar sessions offer P.A.C.E.® credit opportunities and are given by experts in the lab and POCT market.
Watch: POC Testing: Cost vs. Convenience—January 29th, 2019
Presented by: Jim Poggi January 29, 2019 |
The Cost vs. Convenience webinar discusses which tests can make a positive impact in the point-of-care testing (POCT) setting. The webinar challenges the conventional wisdom about which lab tests impact treatment decisions, explores reasons to test at the point of care, and presents statistical data and anecdotal information regarding the impact of lab testing on reductions in morbidity and mortality. You will explore multiple rationales for POCT, including screening options, how chronic disease management is improved by POCT, and how POCT complements vital signs measurements. Along the way, you will learn more about POCT management criteria that optimize in-office lab testing performance and lead to higher levels of staff and patient satisfaction.

Register Now: POC Troponin Testing: Current Status & Future Promise—March 28th, 2019
Presented by: Robert Christenson, Ph.D., DABCC, FACB
March 28th, 2019 | 12:00 PM EST |
Diagnosing and risk assessment of myocardial infarction (MI) is critical in patient management. Because cardiac troponin measurements are the cornerstone for the MI diagnosis, this webinar focuses on the characteristics and considerations that are important when selecting a cardiac troponin assay to provide to clinicians at the point of care. We are clearly moving into the era of high-sensitivity and next-generation cardiac troponin assays. This raises the bar for assuring that the quality of point-of-care assays is up to this new task. This webinar discusses how to assure quality in our activity. Attendees will be better informed about troponin’s role in diagnosis of MI and how to provide appropriate point-of-care services to clinicians ruling in, ruling out, and treating this condition.

Register Now: Laboratory Stewardship Essentials—May 15th, 2019
Presented by: Andrew Fletcher, MD, CPE
May 15th, 2019 | 12:00 PM EDT |
As the healthcare industry transitions from fee-for-service to value-based reimbursement, hospital systems are challenged to improve quality while reducing costs. While laboratory spending only accounts for 2%-3% of overall healthcare costs, the laboratory drives 70%-80% of downstream medical decisions1, 2. For this reason, proper laboratory stewardship is critical in today’s healthcare industry.
This webinar will explore essential steps to establish an effective lab stewardship program, including governance and structure of stewardship committees. Dr. Fletcher will also outline strategies for implementing successful laboratory stewardship interventions. These strategies include consolidation of reference testing for cost reduction and improved turnaround time; reference test formulary development to limit inappropriate inpatient tests; and appropriate utilization of in-house testing, including discussion on the impact of order sets, recurring daily lab tests, and duplicate lab tests. Each of these strategies will drive downstream savings and improve the quality of patient care in healthcare systems.
Learning Objectives:
1Donaldson K, Young D. An evidentiary rules-based approach to reducing unnecessary lab testing. Am J Clin Pathol. 2010;134:503
2Forsman RW. Why is the laboratory an afterthought for managed care organizations? Clin Chem 1996;42:813–6.
