Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) has the potential to transform healthcare. Despite recent advances in AI/ML in everyday life, clinical use of AI/ML remains embryonic. Significant technological, regulatory, and cultural challenges remain. This presentation provides an overview of AI/ML, common classification techniques, and current AI/ML applications in healthcare with focus on laboratory testing.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in health care.
  • Discuss common analytical techniques used for AI/ML and highlight strengths and weaknesses.
  • Identify areas where AI/ML could be used in laboratory medicine and its potential impact in point-of-care settings.
  • Discuss the future of AI/ML in POC testing and how it impacts healthcare.
