Billie’s Corner – Orchard Insights: Plans for Expansion and Use of AI

By Billie Whitehurst, CEO

2024 is here and with it brings exciting possibilities. At Orchard Software, we are always looking for innovative ways to improve the jobs of laboratory professionals and to provide valuable software tools that labs can use to increase their contribution to patient care. A priority focus for us is to help labs address continued staffing challenges and find every efficiency. Cloud-based solutions, automation integration, and a business intelligence (BI) and analytics tool are all examples of Orchard solutions that boost lab efficiency.

Near the end of 2023, we introduced Orchard® Insights™, our BI and analytics solution. Orchard Insights gives labs the advantage of an analytic perspective that can help address the industry staffing shortage and improve overall laboratory productivity and efficiency. Laboratories can track internal key performance indicators that guide business decisions and increase the lab’s value.

Orchard Insights Early Adopter Opportunity

For a limited time, we are offering a unique opportunity for our customers to join our exclusive Orchard Insights early adopter program. This group’s feedback and suggestions will guide the strategic direction and functionality of Orchard Insights. Early adopters will also receive preferential pricing. To learn more about this opportunity, reach out to your Account Manager.

The Potential of AI in the LIS

We do not plan to stop there and have plans to grow our Orchard Insights BI tool to incorporate AI algorithms, driving additional value to our laboratory customers.

Laboratories are slowly incorporating AI tools and digital workflows to evolve and improve the way they do business. Automation and informatics are powerful drivers in clinical labs. Given ongoing industry staffing shortages, this technology can be a powerful way for labs to find and deploy automation and AI to improve efficiency and allow laboratorians to spend less time on manual processes and more time on complex tasks.

AI can analyze the large data sets inherent to the laboratory and provide added functionality within a LIS. We are excited about the potential of AI use and see tremendous opportunities for its future use within the LIS. For example, rather than building reports, generative AI can be used to prompt the system to perform those tasks. At Orchard, our team will continue to research and apply AI concepts in the laboratory space where they prove beneficial and add value.

The Future of Orchard Insights

At Orchard, we are working toward broader use of AI within the LIS. In the future, Orchard Insights will leverage predictive AI and benchmarking analytics to continue to optimize the lab’s operational efficiencies and improvements in patient care. And we will continue to strive to meet the growing needs of our customers, stay up to date on the latest technologies, and continue to improve our offerings.

Artificial intelligence is a boon for many businesses, helping to automate tasks that are difficult for humans to sustain. AI’s ability to analyze large data sets and predict future data is of specific benefit in healthcare and in the laboratory market, bringing an opportunity to enhance patient care. Savvy LIS vendors, like Orchard Software, are already looking at ways to incorporate AI into the LIS to leverage its benefits.

Where in the World Is Orchy?

In a nod to an upcoming holiday, Orchy visited the resting place of a venerated, fifth-century bishop, also known as the “Apostle of Ireland,” who is credited for banishing snakes from the island (though this has been debated). Today, he is best known for his feast day of March 17th. At the site is a cathedral from the 15th century that stands on the grounds of a Benedictine Monastery that was built in 1183.
